Adaptive Recreation

We are committed to providing opportunities for members of the Wolfpack community with physical disabilities to engage in activities that promote physical activity, health and wellness while improving functional independence. Below highlights some of the adaptive programs and services offered.

Aquatic Opportunities

The Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center provides wheelchair accessibility onto the pool deck for spectating purposes and pool use. ADA compliant lifts are available for individuals to enter and exit both the 25-yard and the 50-meter pools.

Fitness Opportunities

A variety of opportunities are available for users who would like to engage in physical activity but may have specific needs. Accessible strength and cardio equipment are available throughout the Carmichael Gym and Wellness and Recreation Center.

The first floor of Wellness and Recreation Center offers four multifunctional, wheelchair-accessible pieces of strength equipment. Each piece of equipment includes fold-away seats and easy-reach handles for improved accessibility.

Wellness and Recreation also offers wheelchair-accessible cardio equipment in each of its cardio spaces in the form of arm-ergometers. Each arm-ergometer provides a removable seat, which allows for the addition of a wheelchair with ease.

Additional Resources

We offer specialized personal trainers and wellness coaches to help students with physical limitations engage in various forms of physical activity for more individualized support. Personal trainers and wellness coaches will provide specialized exercise programs based on specific needs and goals.

For anyone looking to participate in group fitness, instructors are trained to provide proper modifications and accommodations as necessary. Please arrive a few minutes early to class to introduce yourself to the instructor, and they will be happy to make the proper accommodations.

The Challenge Course at Schenck Forest features a universal design to provide accessible, integrated and inclusive challenge course programming. Through specialized equipment, all members of the NC State community, regardless of physical limitations, are provided an opportunity to increase their social, physical and emotional wellness through participation in both high and low challenge course activities.
