NC State joins Colleges around the Country for Healthy Campus Week

NC State is joining colleges around the country for Healthy Campus Week this week. “Healthy Campus Week derives from Partnership for a Healthier America.” Suzanne Hunt, Coordinator of Wellness Outreach, explains the origins of healthy campus week. “PHA tries to get companies, universities, and schools K-12 to make their environment healthier.” Partnership for a Healthier America is an organization that works with public and private institutions in order to promote healthier lifestyles. PHA is supported by their Honorary Chair, First Lady Michelle Obama.

University Recreation will spend the week helping people to think of new ways to live a healthier lifestyle. “Every year they do healthy campus week which inspires all the universities who are a part of PHA to put on different types of events to create awareness of Healthy Campus Week,” Hunt said. UREC will be participating in Healthy Campus Week by putting on special events including some prizes and surprises and encouraging students to use the hashtag #HealthyCampusWeek. “PHA actually sent NC State 2 or 3 prizes to give out to students who use the hashtag, and UREC will be giving out prizes as well.”

Hunt felt that Healthy Campus Week was a huge success last year and that many of the events were interesting and engaging. “Last year we set up healthy tailgates with the wellness coaches around campus and at different locations and times of day, and we offered healthy snacks.”

NC State is the first and only university to complete the objectives to be a healthier campus, and Mr. Wuf was even named the Healthy Mascot Champion. NC State is dedicated to health and wellness and Healthy Campus Week serves as an opportunity for UREC to join forces with campus partners, including NC State Dining, Student Health, and the Counseling Center, to pursue that goal.

Hunt thinks that Healthy Campus week is something that all of the students can and should be involved in. “We want everyone and anyone to be involved. We think people need to understand how easy it is to make small little healthier choices on NC State’s campus.”
