In Loving Memory of Tyler Campbell, Susan Dodson and Hero Miles Campbell

From my heart, and as a friend, I share this remembrance of incredibly special members of our Wolfpack family: Tyler Campbell and Susan Dodson, both former student employees who brightened our department, and their courageous young son, Miles Campbell. The sudden loss of Tyler, Susie and Miles in May 2024 has left a void that words can scarcely describe.

I had the privilege of working alongside Tyler and Susie here at Wellness and Recreation during their time as students at NC State. Even as student staff, Tyler and Susie brought such spirit and dedication that they often felt like the very heart and soul of what we do here at Wellness and Recreation. Their shared passion for health, fitness and the power of community through recreation was infectious. Carmichael Gym, for them, was more than a workplace; it was a hub of connection, laughter, shared purpose and a home away from home. I remember their dedication, their willingness to go the extra mile, and the genuine care they showed for everyone they encountered. They truly embodied the values we strive for at Wellness and Recreation.

In 2018, as Tyler was approaching graduation, he shared a heartfelt message with professional staff as he moved on from his student employment. He wrote of his time here, saying it was “something I never could have believed possible” and that “a large part of my identity has been instilled in UREC and made me the person that I am today.” HIs words beautifully capture the deep impact our department had on his life and the lasting memories he made within these walls.

Tyler and Susie were individuals of exceptional character. Their integrity was unwavering, their kindness boundless. They had a remarkable ability to inspire others, leading by example and always encouraging those around them to embrace well-being and strive for their best. Their love for what we do here wasn’t just a job; it was a fundamental part of who they were, shaping their relationships and their positive impact on our community.

To honor their enduring legacy, Wellness and Recreation is establishing the Campbell and Dodson Family Award. This annual recognition will be bestowed upon a student employee who embodies the same remarkable character, integrity and strong work ethic that Tyler and Susie exemplified during their time with us. This award will keep their spirit alive and inspire future generations of student leaders within our department.

On a personal note, the loss of their son, Miles, has also been deeply felt. My son, Ryder, was fortunate to have known Miles as a friend. Miles’ incredible act of heroism in donating his organs to save other children speaks volumes about the beautiful soul he was. Attending the Wake Med Hero Walk with Ryder was a profoundly moving experience. The playing of Sia’s “Unstoppable” during the ceremony will forever be etched in my memory as a poignant tribute to the strength and resilience of the entire Campbell family.

Emily Woods, Facility Supervisor and Wellness Coach

It is with great honor and pride that I announce the inaugural recipient of the Campbell and Dodson Family Award: Emily Woods. Emily, who currently serves as a valued facility supervisor and wellness coach, joined our team in September 2023 and has quickly become an invaluable member of our Wellness and Recreation family.

The nominations for Emily spoke volumes about her character and dedication. Her peers and supervisors consistently highlighted her unwavering positive energy, her genuine commitment to helping others and her strong work ethic in creating a welcoming and safe environment for everyone. Emily’s compassion, her proactive approach, and her dedication to the mission of Wellness and Recreation truly mirror the qualities that made Tyler and Susie so special.

Emily’s supervisor wrote, “A quiet yet compassionate individual, Emily constantly puts others first, readily assisting fellow students. Through her caring nature, Emily has comforted users dealing with injuries or shared a reassuring smile as she walked a new student to their first class in Carmichael.”

Her peer shared, “Emily’s strong work ethic shines as she ensures the facility remains clean, safe and fully operational during her shifts. She takes pride in maintaining a welcoming environment, actively “hunting” for tasks to improve cleanliness and safety, ensuring patrons feel cared for and secure. Her proactive approach and genuine care set her apart as a true leader and role model.”

Emily graduates in May 2025 with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Nutrition. Upon graduation, Emily will continue at NC State as she begins the Master of Social Work program. Emily will continue to inspire others with her passion for helping people and desire to make the world a better place to live in her program and as a wellness coach.

Emily, in your dedication, compassion and commitment to the well-being of our Wolfpack community, you beautifully embody the spirit of Tyler and Susie Campbell. On behalf of Wellness and Recreation, I extend my heartfelt congratulations on being the first recipient of the Campbell and Dodson Family Award.

Though the absence of Tyler, Susie, and Miles leaves a deep ache in our hearts, their impact on our lives and the NC State community will never fade. Tyler’s own words from his farewell email echo in our minds, reminding us of the profound connections forged within these walls: “I refuse to say goodbye because part of me will never leave. So instead I say, until next time.”

Tyler, Susie, and dear Miles, your light will continue to shine brightly in our memories and through the legacy of this award. Until next time.
