Miranda Janis ‘21, arrived at NC State with an open mind, but little did she know that her journey would be profoundly shaped by her time with Wellness and Recreation. “Working at WellRec was the best part of my college experience,” Miranda reflects. More than just a job, it was the foundation upon which her passions were built and her future was secured.

Miranda’s initial role as a facility and fitness assistant quickly evolved. She found herself drawn to wellness coaching, a role that revealed a hidden talent: compassion. “The health industry can be quick to judge,” she explains. “But working with others helped me understand their perspectives and experiences. It was special to empathize with people and provide tailored information to guide them.” This newfound compassion ignited a passion for community health promotion and a desire to break down barriers and ensure everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive.

WellRec also provided a platform for growth. “WellRec did a great job of preparing us for situations, especially in risk management,” Miranda recalls. “We were encouraged to practice, push ourselves and take charge.” These experiences instilled confidence and leadership skills that she continues to value in her professional life. Miranda credits WellRec with laying the foundation for her leadership potential, a potential that blossomed further in graduate school.

The impact of WellRec extended beyond skills development. For Miranda, it was a transformative experience.  “I came from an environment where overall health was not a priority,” she admits. “I didn’t know anything about fitness, nutrition or mental health. WellRec provided me the space and resources to learn and change my life.”  This personal transformation sparked a desire to help others. Seeing the support and mentorship she received from the WellRec professional staff, Miranda knew she wanted to do the same for others.

Now, Miranda is the Cadet Health and Wellness Coordinator at Virginia Military Institute. Her journey, from a student unsure of her path to a leader in health promotion, is a testament to the power of passion, ignited by opportunity and fueled by donor support. “My role as a wellness coach completely altered my education and career path,” she says. “Working at WellRec made me fall in love with fitness and physical activity. I want to make an impact on students, to inspire them to lead healthy and meaningful lives, just as I was impacted during my college experience.”

Miranda’s story is just one example of how donor contributions to NC State’s Day of Giving can make a real difference in the lives of students.  By supporting programs like WellRec, you’re not just funding facilities and equipment; you’re fueling passions, igniting potential, and empowering the next generation of leaders. Just like Miranda, countless students are waiting for their chance to discover their purpose. Your gift can help them find it.  Passion inspired. Donor fueled.  Give today and be a part of their story.
