Setting the Tone and Building Connections at Wellness and Recreation

Student Employee Spotlight: Shane Lamont

As Student Employee Appreciation Week (April 13-19, 2025) approaches, NC State Wellness and Recreation is excited to highlight the incredible contributions of our dedicated student staff. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Shane Lamont, a senior Business Administration major concentrating in Supply Chain and Operations Management with a minor in Accounting, who excels as a member services supervisor.

For Shane, the best part of working at the Member Services desk is the direct interaction with the NC State community. “Working member services, I really enjoy just that, getting to interact with members,” Shane shares. “We are the first face people see when they come in or they call, and we can really set the tone for their whole visit. I especially love interacting with prospective / admitted students’ families.” His positive attitude and welcoming demeanor create a great first impression for everyone who engages with Wellness and Recreation.

Shane has also experienced significant personal and professional growth during his time with us. “Working member services really gives you the opportunity to become more confident as you have to deal with lots of different people and different situations,” he explains. “So just getting the experience of talking to lots of people helps you build that confidence.” This daily interaction has honed his communication skills and fostered a greater sense of assurance in handling diverse situations.

Beyond his customer service skills, Shane has discovered valuable talents within himself. “I have learned I am pretty good at thinking on my feet and prioritizing tasks in order of most important to least,” he reflects. “This is a really valuable skill in life in general but also work.” This ability to quickly assess situations and make effective decisions is a key asset in his supervisory role.

Working at Wellness and Recreation has also allowed Shane to build meaningful relationships across the department. “I have built relationships with all sorts of people including my member services entrance assistant staff that work at the same time as me, other member services supervisors,” Shane says. “But I feel like I have gotten to know our professional staff really well, which is a valuable connection. Besides that, getting to know the members who always come in at the same time and just getting to be a part of their day they can look forward to is rewarding.” These connections highlight the strong sense of community within Wellness and Recreation.

When asked about his favorite memories, Shane emphasizes the camaraderie within the member services team. “Some of my favorite memories are just being able to talk with the member services team during meetings and shifts,” he shares. He also fondly remembers specific instances where he went the extra mile for members. “I also specifically remember 3 times when I went out of my way to help someone more than I needed to for my job and how appreciative they were.” These moments of impactful service are a testament to his dedication.

Shane also appreciates the facilities themselves, noting, “I have loved my time working and getting to use Carmichael as a student as well; it’s by far the nicest gym I have ever been to.” He also echoed a sentiment shared by many of our student staff, recalling, “One of my favorite memories as an employee was going through the high-ropes course as one of our team bonding activities. This activity was super unique and fun and helped us gain confidence and trust in one another.”

Thank you, Shane, for your positive attitude, your dedication to our members, and your commitment to making Wellness and Recreation a welcoming space for everyone! Your contributions as a Member Services Supervisor are deeply appreciated. We wish you all the best as you prepare for graduation this May!
