Ensuring Safety and Fostering Community at Wellness and Recreation

Student Employee Spotlight: Matthew Badger

As Student Employee Appreciation Week (April 13-19, 2025) approaches, NC State Wellness and Recreation is proud to recognize the invaluable contributions of our student staff. This week, we’re highlighting Matthew Badger, a dedicated senior Sport Management major with minors in Sport Science and Coaching Education, who serves as both a Facility Supervisor and a Sports Programs Evaluator.

For Badger, working at Wellness and Recreation offers a welcome balance to his academic pursuits. “Being able to work at a place I enjoy that gives me a break from classes” is what he appreciates most about his roles. This enjoyment translates into his commitment to creating a positive and safe environment for our members.

Through his experience, Badger has developed crucial skills that extend beyond the classroom. “I would definitely say I am more equipped to handle emergency situations and think quickly on my feet to ensure everyone is as safe as possible,” he shares. His dual roles have provided him with practical experience in maintaining a secure facility and evaluating sports programs officials with a focus on safety protocols.

Badger has also discovered a keen eye for detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving. “I am extremely detail-oriented and can quickly diagnose when something is out of the ordinary,” he explains. “This allows me to anticipate potential problems and proactively solve them before they happen.” This valuable skill makes him a reliable and effective member of our team.

Beyond the professional development, Badger has also forged meaningful connections during his time at Wellness and Recreation. “I built a lot of incredible friendships during my time here with people that I never would’ve met otherwise,” he says, highlighting the strong sense of camaraderie among our student staff.

One of Badger’s favorite memories encapsulates the unique community spirit fostered within our facilities. “I was working during our Elite 8 game against Duke, and by the end of the game, everyone in the gym was crowded around the same TV,” he recalls. “It was a really cool sense of community that I hadn’t experienced before, much less while working.” This shared excitement and sense of belonging are integral to the Wellness and Recreation experience.

Badger was nominated for the Campbell Dodson Family Award, which will be awarded during the Wolfies later this week. This award was created to honor the enduring legacy of two very special former student employees, Tyler Campbell and Susan Dodson, who were tragically lost last year, along with their son Miles. The award recognizes a student employee who embodies that same remarkable character, strong work ethic, and deep commitment to the mission of Wellness and Recreation.

Thank you, Badger, for your dedication to ensuring the safety and enjoyment of our facilities and programs. Your sharp eye for detail and your ability to connect with others make you a vital part of the Wellness and Recreation team. We appreciate your hard work and wish you all the best in your upcoming graduation!u will continue to achieve!
