The clatter of weights, the rhythmic squeak of sneakers on the basketball court, the friendly chatter echoing through the Wellness and Recreation Center – these are the sounds that have defined Michael’s NC State experience. More than just a place to work out, Wellness and Recreation has been instrumental in Michael’s personal and professional growth, transforming him from a shy freshman into a confident leader with a clear vision for his future.
Michael’s journey began in November 2022 as a member services specialist. He quickly discovered the vibrant community that makes Wellness and Recreation so special. “The thing that stands out the most is all of the people I get to work with,” he says. “You meet so many unique people from so many different backgrounds. I enjoy getting to know people on a personal level and hearing all of their stories.” As a program assistant, this connection with others became even more central to his role.
One of Michael’s favorite memories shows how WellRec can bring people together unexpectedly. He met his girlfriend, Taylor, while cleaning up a spilled Moe’s catering order in the hallway. “So that’s the story,” he laughs, “we met over Moe’s.” Another memorable moment was his first team-building experience, rock climbing. “I didn’t know anyone and I was so scared,” he recalls. “But everyone was so nice to me.” This welcoming atmosphere, particularly from the many international students employed at WellRec, helped Michael feel at home and ignited his passion for working with diverse populations.
Perhaps the most significant transformation Michael experienced at WellRec was in his communication skills. “When I started, I was very introverted,” he admits. “For months I felt like I didn’t speak to anyone. Working here, I learned how to speak to people and how to communicate. Now I talk to everyone all the time. I can credit this job to that – I was so in my shell, and people brought me out. They wouldn’t let me not talk to them.”
Wellness and Recreation also reinforced Michael’s passion for health and wellness. “Being here, it reinforces every day I am at WellRec,” he explains. “This is something I love to do. It reminds me of how important health and wellness is.” This passion has solidified his desire to pursue a career in medicine. “I want to help people with their own health,” he says, “and I enjoy having the opportunity to help other people reach their health goals. There are so many ways to help people accomplish that. With my love of science, this blends perfectly.”

As a program assistant, Michael honed his leadership skills, including public speaking and problem-solving. “My first meeting, I was probably reading straight off the slides,” he recalls. “And now it’s habit, and I can communicate to large groups of people.” He’s also learned to tackle unexpected challenges. “I’ve encountered problems I never thought I would have, and I have to critically think,” he says. “Regardless of the career path I have, I know problem-solving is beneficial to my future.”
The close-knit community at WellRec has provided Michael with lifelong friends and connections. He describes the strong sense of camaraderie among the staff, from his early days in Member Services to the growing team of entrance assistants. “Every person I would consider my friend,” he says.
WellRec has equipped Michael with a range of skills essential for any career, particularly medicine. “Communication, writing a professional email, organization, keeping a calendar, teamwork, problem-solving,” he lists. “These have prepared me for a career in medicine.” He emphasizes the personal benefits as well. “It’s been so beneficial to me as a person. I didn’t know how to communicate when I got here – for at least six months. Then I realized the benefits of taking advantage of working here. Not once has this felt like work; I truly enjoy being here every day, and I know I’m getting a good experience.” Even something as simple as keeping a calendar has become a valuable skill.
Now, as he anticipates graduating in May 2026, Michael is focused on his goal of attending medical school. He’s confident that the experiences and skills he gained at WellRec have prepared him for the challenges ahead.
