Fitness Workshops Begin This Weekend

University Recreation’s Fitness Workshop: Align Your Practice is taking place on Saturday, January 28. UREC’s Fitness Workshops were created to provide individuals the ability to sharpen particular skills with specialized one-on-one attention. Leigha Krick, Group Fitness Coordinator, saw the opportunity to dig deeper into the techniques used in group fitness classes with those members that wanted more direct feedback and instruction.

Fitness workshops differ from Small Group training classes in multiple ways. One of the main ways is that they are not progressive in nature like the Small Group Training classes. Fitness workshops are a one-time opportunity to learn about a specific topic. Fitness Workshops are classes direct contact with the instructor while Small Group Training classes are a set of classes over seven weeks working towards a specific goal.

The nature of the Fitness Workshop classes allows for members who have an interest in a specific area to explore that interest without the cost or time commitment associated with small group training classes. UREC’s Fitness Workshops are beginning with a focus on yoga, as Krick explains: “We started this initiative with yoga because we have a number of very highly qualified instructors, our 200 Hour Registered Yoga Teachers, who have gone through extensive training to be able to provide additional coaching and mastery of yoga poses.”

Krick thinks that UREC’s instructors will help to make each Fitness Workshop as helpful as possible. “Some workshops are focused on helping beginners learn safer alignment, such as our Align Your Practice workshops, while others are focused on showing and educating participant on how to build the strength and stability in the core and upper body to invert their practice, such as our Handstand Workshop.” Fitness Workshops will expand to other areas in the future, but UREC is excited to begin this unique experience with Align Your Practice this weekend.
