Intramural Sports Finish the Semester With an Ace

Intramural Sports Championship Nights have long been anticipated by athletes.  With MCs announcing touchdowns on the field and energizing music playing throughout the courts, there is never a dull moment. Pack TV, the student-run broadcast program that covers varsity, club, and intramural sports, keeps students in the loop by providing live coverage as well as highlights of the games on their youtube channel. Full of excitement and variety, these nights allow students to let loose and engage in their competitive edge for a night of friendly competition.

The sports range from Indoor Volleyball and Basketball to Outdoor Flag Football and Soccer, and include many extra activities such as Pool Battleship and the Texas Hold’Em Tournament.  With such a diverse range of athletics, these events bring together students who have been committing time and effort to their team all semester for one final celebration of the game.

On October 25 Sports Programs hosted the NC State Unified Flag Football Championships.  Bringing together Special Olympics athletes with NC State students, these Unified Sports games establish supportive atmospheres where families of the Special Olympics players often come out to cheer on their fathers, mothers, siblings and the like while all athletes can bond over the sport they love.

On November 29 Indoor Volleyball brought the heat with several close matches between Men’s Competitive and Women’s/Sorority.  In the Men’s division, ‘Rory’s Team’ pulled a swift comeback from their seemingly decided fate and turned the tables to defeat ‘Bounce It’ 16-14 in the third set. The Women’s/Sorority league also saw great competition as the opposing teams competed neck-and-neck for the majority of the match until ‘No-Dig-gity’ shot ahead with the last few points to take the win over Pi Beta Phi with 15-13 in the final set.

The final night of Intramural Sports Championships concluded with several divisions of Flag Football.  Pack TV provided lively commentary as the contending teams versed in the steadily increasing rainfall.  After the victory, captain of the Women’s ‘Dream Team’ Morgan Brown complemented the “fun environment  provided by Sports Programs” as her champion team gathered for group photos and shook hands with the runner-up team Chi Omega.

Though the nature of Competitive Intramural Sports may vary between playing grounds, the driving force behind the players remains the same: it is the love for their game that brings the teams back out, week after week.  According to Assistant Director of Sports Programs Ben Strunk, the goal of these championship nights is to “provide a premier experience to our participants”.  Sports Programs achieves this goal through their dedication and meticulous planning of each individual event.
