Lake Raleigh Earth Day Cleanup This Weekend

Looking for a way to give back and support the environment? Come join NC State and the surrounding community this Earth Day for an afternoon outside to truly make a difference. Earth day is a very actionable holiday where people are encouraged to get out and make an impact. It was first recognized by the U.S. government in 1970 when its founder, Senator Gaylord Nelson, had the idea after the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. This Sunday, April 22 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., NC State University Recreation is taking action and co-sponsoring a Lake Raleigh Earth Day cleanup with the University Sustainability Office, Centennial Campus, Facilities, the Adventure Club and NC State Stewards. This event is open to everyone and anyone, not just members of the NC State community.

The group will spend the day at Lake Raleigh clearing trash off the water in canoes, removing trash from the shorelines and working on trail maintenance to prevent erosion and make the trail system easier to navigate for hikers and joggers. It is highly recommended that those attending wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get dirty. Additional items to bring include sunblock and a water bottle, but most importantly yourself! Snacks and water will be provided.

For those planning to attend, the group will meet in the Dorothy and Roy Park Alumni Center parking lot by Lake Raleigh before the cleanup begins (2450 Alumni Drive Raleigh, NC 27606). University Recreation’s Assistant Director of Outdoor Adventures, Nathan Williams will be leading the event. For any personal or specific questions, you can reach him at 919-513-8126.
