Start Your NC State Career with an Outdoor Adventure

Every summer, Outdoor Adventures at University Recreation offers Wolfpack Bound, a week long outdoor trip reserved for incoming freshmen to develop friendships, engage in leadership, and participate in activities that will guide them to succeed in a college environment.

Kayla Stephens, a rising sophomore studying Sport Management, went backpacking and climbing during her Wolfpack Bound trip last summer. “It was a good icebreaker to meet people,” Stephens noted on how the program prepared her for college, “I got used to some of the people I would be spending a lot of time with within (the Scholars) village.”

What makes Wolfpack Bound unique is that it is led by current students, so participants get to talk about their fears and ask real questions about the college lifestyle while in a smaller setting. The program was designed to make a large university feel small, even for just a week.

Students can register for the program with little to no outdoor experience, making it available to all students regardless of major, interest, or background. Stephens said she got to go climbing to the top of a cliff, “ I would’ve never done that before.”

When asked if she would recommend the program and if she has any advice, Stephens said, “I definitely would! I had so much fun, you just have to be willing to work as a team and get of your comfort zone.”

This summer, there will be two types of trips, Backpacking/Climbing and Sea Kayaking. Both rising freshmen and transfer students are welcome to attend. There are three sessions available for each, spanning from mid July to early August. University Recreation will be providing transportation, equipment, and meals for the duration of the trip.
