UREC: Building Skill and Community One Slope at a Time
On February 4, 13 NC State students traveled to Winterplace Resort for a day of skiing and snowboarding. Outdoor Adventures coordinator Erin Daniels and student trip leader Stephanie Ferguson accompanied the group to the Resort in West Virginia.
The trip provided participants a break from their normal routine and a change of scenery. A day at the library was replaced with zooming down a mountain. Erin Daniels hoped to see students “gain new skills, form new relationships, create a sense of community among the group, do a new activity, and have fun.”
This trip provided students the ability to improve their skills on the slope in addition to developing ties with their community. With approximately half of the group skiing or snowboarding for the first time, it provided growth for the group as a whole. Experienced participants were able to provide guidance to the beginners. Reflecting on the trip, Daniels believes the students grew individually and formed relationships that would not have been made outside of the trip.
The unity of the group was demonstrated throughout the day. The number of participants skiing and snowboarding together grew after each run down the mountain. It did not take long before the individuals decided to complete their day at the resort together. The beginner skiers and snowboarders realized they enjoyed their runs down the mountain more when in the company of new friends.
Outdoor Adventures offers additional trips throughout the remainder of the semester. Experience the personal growth and newfound sense of community these trips provide. Visit the Outdoor Adventures page for more information.
