7th Annual Rubbage Ride Beautifies NC State Campus

On Saturday, April 9, University Recreation partnered with the NC State Sustainability Office, Grounds Management, Waste Reduction and Recycling, Transportation to host the 7th Annual Rubbage Ride. From 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. volunteers walked or biked around campus to pick up litter and trash, in order to beautify campus as well as make the area a cleaner and healthier place.

Three students, Holly, Allison and Carmen, participated in Rubbage Ride to fulfill their service requirement as members of the Ultimate Frisbee Club. All three walked around Bragaw, Lee, and the Tri-Towers to pick up trash. During their search at Bragaw, they uncovered a “glass bottle graveyard,” where glass bottles dating back to more than twenty years were found buried near the residence hall. After digging up the bottles and finishing their rounds, they filtered through the trash and collectively gathered 60 pounds of recyclables, and 7 pounds of compost.

The 2016 Rubbage Ride was an incredibly successful event, gathering 465 pounds of trash total around Main Campus and Centennial Campus. When the event was over, the participants were awarded with lunch and various prizes. “I would highly recommend this event, it’s a good way to give back and it only took four hours to really make a difference,” said Holly after her group finished the ride.
