Life-Size Mario Kart and Pokemon Go Highlight Fall Intramural Sports Offerings

This Fall, NC State University students will be able to act out their favorite board and video games through a new program introduced by University Recreation.

The “Life-Size” game series, hosted by Intramural Sports, takes a unique spin on popular board and video games, where students participate as part of the game.

A life-size version of the popular board game “Hungry, Hungry Hippos” is the first offering, with registration continuing through Wednesday, August 24 and played on Friday, August 26 on Courts 2 and 3 of the Carmichael Gym. Students are paired in groups of four and take turns gathering as many plastic balls with a basket in one minute while competing against three other teams.

The idea for the series came after Assistant Director of Sports Programs, Ben Strunk, noticed a demand for non-traditional Intramural Sports offerings.

“We believe students are looking for unique recreational experiences outside of the traditional season-long team sports. Our unique new special events provide a one-day premier experience for NC State students of all athletic interest and ability levels.” Strunk said.

Life-Size Versions of “Pokemon GO” and “Mario Kart” also highlight the series. The “Pokemon Go Team Challenge” will feature teams of two-to-four participants walking around central campus to different PokeStops in an effort to catch as many Pokemon as possible while uploading photo proof to Instagram to win prizes. Registration for this event continues through Monday, August 29, with the challenge beginning on the same day at Miller Fields.

In Mario Kart, participants will wear cardboard boxes designed to look like their favorite Mario Kart character karts. Racers will speedwalk around “Luigi Raceway” on the Centennial Campus Oval and use shells, bananas, and star power to cross the finish line first. Registration for Mario Kart will run from Monday, August 29 to Monday, September 19, and the event will take place on Friday, September 23.
