NC State Recognized for Exercise is Medicine Program Participation

NC State University has been recognized as a Silver-Level partner for efforts in the Exercise is Medicine® On Campus program. The distinction recognizes campuses that are actively engaged in educating others on the Exercise is Medicine solution for both the treatment and prevention of long-term illness and disease.

On May 29, 2015 Exercise is Medicine® (EIM) officially recognized 24 colleges and universities participating in the EIM on Campus program. Universities and colleges participating in EIM on Campus promote physical activity as a vital sign of health to their campus community. The awards were given as part of the 2015 Exercise is Medicine World Congress, held in conjunction with the American College of Sports Medicine’s Annual Meeting, held in San Diego, California.

EIM-On Campus encourages faculty, staff and students to work together toward improving the health and well-being of the campus community by making movement a part of the daily campus culture and providing students with the tools necessary to strengthen healthy lifelong physical activity habits. The initiative aims to connect healthcare providers with university fitness professionals to provide a referral system for exercise prescription.

The initiative began at NC State University in October 2014 and is a collaboration between University Recreation, Student Health Services and the Counseling Center. Thirty-Eight NC State students have been referred by healthcare providers in the first year.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized for our efforts in year one. This accomplishment represents the collective efforts of University Recreation, Counseling Center, and Student Health Services. We are excited to see how this initiative will impact the NC State community as it continues to grow and evolve”, said Nick Drake, Assistant Director of Fitness and advisor for EIM-OC Leadership Team.
