New Student Outdoor Trips

Wolf Camp

Wolf Camp is an optional incoming NC State student outdoor program. These three- or four-day trips provide an opportunity to meet other new students while engaging in the North Carolina outdoors. Trips and activities are led by trained professional and student staff. Start your experience here at NC State off right before the fall semester!

Wolf Camp at Grayson Highlands

This program is for all incoming Honors program students.

  • Dates: Saturday, July 18 – Tuesday, July 21
  • Cost: $225

Get to know your fellow incoming students while hiking, bouldering, and camping at Grayson Highlands. Bouldering is a climbing discipline focused on strength and problem-solving. You’ll climb rock formations without ropes or harnesses, using landing mats and spotting techniques to stay safe.

No prior outdoor experience needed. We’ll help you gear up and teach you everything you need to know!

Transportation, meals, equipment, and instruction are included. Participants may opt to meet the group at Wellness and Recreation or in Damascus Va at The Damascus Trail Center. This is a moderately strenuous trip. Participants will hike each day on rolling terrain. Final details and packing tips will be shared during the pre-trip meeting.

Example Schedule:

  • Saturday:
    • 7:30 a.m. Arrive at NC State Outdoor Adventures
    • 7:45 a.m. Name game and get ready to go
    • 8 a.m. Depart for Damascus, VA
    • Noon Lunch in Damascus and alternative pick-up/trip start location
    • 1 p.m. Depart for Grayson Highlands State Park
    • 2 p.m. Set up camp, cook dinner, and get to know you activity
    • 10 p.m. Goodnight!
  • Sunday:
    • 8 a.m. Wake up and make breakfast
    • 9:30 a.m. Start 5-7 mile hike, stopping for snacks and lunch
    • Get back to camp, cook dinner, play games
    • 10 p.m. Goodnight!
  • Monday:
    • 8 a.m. Wake up and make breakfast
    • 9 a.m. Hike to Bouldering area of park
    • Lunch break on the trail, afternoon bouldering
    • Head back to camp, clean up and make dinner
    • 10 p.m. Goodnight!
  • Tuesday:
    • 7 a.m. Wake up, make breakfast, and pack up camp
    • 8 a.m. Enjoy the last of our outdoor activities
    • 1 p.m. Pack-up and head back to the van
    • 2 p.m. Arrive at Damascus for drop-off
    • 6 p.m. Arrive back at Wellness and Recreation Center for goodbyes!

Wolf Camp at Asheville

This program is for all incoming students.

  • Dates: Saturday, August 1 – Tuesday, August 4
  • Cost: $400.00

Make some memories and get to know fellow incoming freshmen on our Wolf Camp Asheville Program! Wolf Camp kicks off college life with adventures like Whitewater Rafting, Hiking, and Canyoneering! Nights will be spent sleeping under the stars at a local campground. This program is an opportunity to learn about yourself, and your peers, as you explore the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. 

No prior outdoor experience needed. We’ll help you gear up and teach you everything you need to know!

Transportation, meals, equipment, and instruction are included. Participants will meet and depart from  Wellness and Recreation or in Asheville, NC. This is a moderately strenuous trip. Participants should be able to walk a few miles on uneven terrain, and swim wearing a personal floatation device. Final details and packing tips will be shared during the pre-trip meeting.

Example Schedule:

  • Saturday:
    • 1 p.m. Meet instructors and other participants in Asheville, NC
    • 2 p.m. Get to know other incoming students
    • 5 p.m. Set up camp and make dinner
    • 6 p.m. Campfire, s’mores, get to know you games
    • 10 p.m. Goodnight!
  • Sunday:
    • 8 a.m. Wake up and make breakfast
    • Whitewater Rafting at French Broad River, and lunch on the riverside
    • 4 p.m. Get back to camp, clean up
    • 5 p.m. Make dinner
    • 6 p.m. Campfire, debrief, and games
    • 10 p.m. Goodnight!
  • Monday: 
    • 8 a.m. Wake up and make breakfast
    • Canyoneering
    • 4 p.m. Get back to camp, clean up
    • 5 p.m. Make dinner
    • 6 p.m. Campfire, debrief, and games
    • 10 p.m. Goodnight!
  • Tuesday:
    • 8 a.m. Wake up, make breakfast, and pack up camp
    • Morning hike, last debrief
    • 11 a.m. Trip dismissal, goodbyes!

Registration

Register and pay for your trip at our MyWellRec portal.

  • Please utilize the student’s information when creating an account, not the parent or guardian.
  1. After registration, you will be emailed a welcome sign up packet.

Once you register, you will receive an email confirmation that includes more trip details, items to bring and other helpful information.

Refunds

You will not be refunded if you have registered and do not show up for the trip. If you wish to cancel your registration, you must give 14 days advance notice from the trip’s start. A partial refund may be given if we can replace your spot on the trip. We will refund your trip payment if the trip is canceled.
