Health and Water Safety Courses

Our aquatics program offers American Red Cross courses throughout the year to NC State students and Wellness and Recreation members.


First Aid/CPR/AED (Blended Learning)

Participants will learn to recognize and respond to breathing, cardiac and first aid emergencies. The blended format combines award-winning, interactive online simulation learning with an in-person classroom session to learn and practice critical lifesaving skills. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years.

Prerequisites

  • There are no prerequisites to participate in this course.

Requirements

  • Participants must be NC State students or 18 years or older to participate in our courses.
  • Complete the online learning content before attending the first in-person session.
  • Attend and actively participate in all class sessions.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
  • Score a minimum of 80 percent on the instructor course final written exam.

Lifeguarding (Blended Learning)

This course builds the same knowledge and skills as traditional in-person training. The online portion of the course includes interactive lessons and activities that can be completed on your own time before the start of the first session. Instructor-led sessions reinforce the learning and the practical skill-building portion of the class. Upon completion of the course, participant certifications will be valid for two years.

    • Saturday, Feb. 10 | 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.
    • Sunday, Feb. 11 | 10:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Option II:
    • Friday, April 19 | 5:30 – 9 p.m.
    • Saturday, April 20 | 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.
    • Sunday, April 21 | 10:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

NOTE: Attendance at all three days of the course options listed above are required to earn the certification.

Prerequisites

  • Participants must be NC State students or 18 years or older to participate in our lifeguard courses.
  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
  • Tread water for two minutes using only the participant’s legs.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds without goggles.
    • Starting in the water the participant will swim 20 yards to retrieve a 10-pound object at a depth of 10 feet by either performing a feet-first surface dive or a head-first surface dive.

  • Complete the online learning content before attending the first in-person session.
  • Attend and actively participate in all class sessions.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
  • Score a minimum of 80 percent on the instructor course final written exam.

Lifeguard Recertification

Lifeguarding review classes are designed to help update skills and extend your certification for an additional two years. You must have a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or one that has expired within 30 days. Upon completion of the course, participant certifications will be valid for two years.

Refunds

No refund will be issued if you are unable to pass the prerequisite skills evaluation and/or the lifeguarding re-certification course.
