Outdoor Adventures Trips

Fall 2023 Schedule:

Join the Outdoor Adventure team during Wolfpack Welcome Week for s’mores by the campfire, and learn about all the offerings we have this fall!

  • Time: 6 – 8 p.m.
  • Cost (per date): $15 (students) | $20 (Wellness and Recreation members)
  • Location: Lake Raleigh

Deadline to register is Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).

Enjoy all nature has to offer with a beautiful spring sunset while practicing yoga all while on our Stand Up Paddle Boards. This trip is beginner friendly and requires no previous yoga or paddle boarding experience. 

Itinerary:

  • 6 p.m. | Trip Starts: Check in at the Lake Raleigh Boat Ramp
  • 6:15 p.m. | Start paddling with Trip Staff
  • 7 p.m. | Enjoy yoga and the sunset from the middle of the lake
  • 8 p.m. | Trip ends: Have a great evening!

Transportation, equipment, and instruction is included.

  • Time: 3 – 5 p.m.
  • Cost: $15 (students) | $20 (Wellness and Recreation members)
  • Location: Schenck Memorial Forest

Deadline to register is Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).

Start your weekend with an afternoon hiking and practicing yoga among the trees of Schenck Forest. This trip is run in conjunction with the Counseling Center to provide an opportunity for you to work on your wellbeing away from campus.

Itinerary:

  • 3 p.m. | Check in at the Outdoor Adventures Boat Bay and drive to Schenck Forest
  • Hike approximately 1-2 mils of easy trails
  • Participate in a yoga session in the shade of pine trees
  • 4:30 p.m. | Depart to return to campus

Transportation and instruction are included. This will be a beginner friendly hike with easy terrain. Yoga will also be beginner friendly.

Deadline to register is Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).

Wake up and start your weekend right with a morning hike to Umstead State Park. This trip will allow you to see the beauty and diversity of resources hosted in this park located just a short drive from the university.

Itinerary:

  • 9 a.m. | Trip Starts: Check in at the Outdoor Adventures Boat Bay and drive to Umstead State Park
  • 9:30 a.m. | Hike approximately two miles before returning to Wellness and Recreation
  • 11 a.m. | Trip Ends: Arrive back on campus, enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Transportation and instruction are included. This will be a beginner friendly hike with easy to moderately difficult terrain.

  • Time: 10 – 11 a.m. or 5 – 6 p.m.
  • Cost: $10 (students) | $15 (Wellness and Recreation members)
  • Location: Raleigh Greenways

Get outside for Wellness Day this semester and explore the Raleigh Greenways.

Deadline to register is Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).

Spend your weekend flying high above the ground by going zip-lining and climbing in the early spring weather.

Itinerary:

  • 6 a.m. | Meet at Outdoor Adventures
  • 12 p.m. | Enjoy a scenic picnic lunch before enjoying an afternoon of zip-lining.
  • 6:30 p.m. | Welcome back, clean up and say goodbye.
  • Time: 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Cost: $45 (students) | $65 (Wellness and Recreation members)
  • Location: North Carolina Zoo

Deadline to register is Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).

The North Carolina Zoo celebrates nature by being the world’s largest natural habitat zoo for 1,700 animals. Join us for a day of exploring the Zoo and visiting animals such as bears, wolves, lions, lemurs, zebras, giraffes, and so much more.

Itinerary:

  • 8 a.m. | Check in at the Outdoor Adventures Boat Bay and drive to the NC Zoo
  • 10 a.m. | Arrive at the zoo. Participants may wander the park at your leisure.
  • 3 p.m. | Depart Zoo to head back to NC State University.
  • 5 p.m. | Arrive back on campus, enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Transportation and instruction are included. This trip does not include food. Attendees will need to purchase meals at one of the zoo’s dining options.

  • Time: 6 a.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Cost: $80 (students) | $100 (Wellness and Recreation members)
  • Location: Hanging Rock State Park

Deadline to register is Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).

Leave behind the ropes and harnesses and come bouldering with us at Hanging Rock State Parks’ bouldering area called Moore’s Wall. Bouldering is a great way to get started climbing as it allows you to practice climbing techniques and problem solving without having to be far from the ground. This trip is beginner friendly and requires no
previous climbing experience.

Itinerary: 

  • 6 a.m. | Check in at Outdoor Adventures and drive to Hanging Rock State Park
  • 8 a.m. | Try a variety of boulders and learn new techniques from our staff. We’ll have a “picnic” style lunch at the bouldering site.
  • 4 p.m. | Drive back to Wellness and Recreation to clean up
  • 6 p.m. | Go home

Transportation, food, equipment, and instruction are included.

Deadline to register is Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).

  • Location: Farmer’s Market

Deadline to register is Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).

Enjoy a morning of biking to the Farmer’s Market, shopping, and riding back to campus. Equipment is included and we can assist in transporting your shopping items back to campus. This is a beginner trip, but you must be comfortable riding a bike on the roadways at a moderate pace to participate.

Itinerary:

  • 9 a.m. | Meet at Outdoor Adventures Boat Bay to get fitted for a bike and helmet. Then bike to Farmer’s Market
  • 10 a.m. | Shopping at the Farmer’s Market
  • 12 p.m. | Ride back to Wellness and Recreation

Deadline to register is Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).

Check out the NC State Challenge Course! Participants will climb into the high course and traverse the elements before flying down the Zipline!

Itinerary:

  • 1 and 3 p.m. | Shuttles will departs from the Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center
    • Participants may drive themselves to the course anytime between 1 – 4 p.m.
  • 2:30 and 5 p.m. | Shuttles will depart the Challenge Course to return to campus

Instruction and equipment are included. This is a beginner-friendly event and no experience is necessary.

Did you know cave temperatures stay the same year round? This makes it the perfect place to visit and stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Caving provides a unique and inspiring adventure to escape the city lights and see how mountains are formed from the inside. Our trained trip leaders will guide you through the cave safely and teach you everything you need to know. This trip is beginner friendly and no prior experience is necessary.

Itinerary

  • Saturday
    • 7 a.m. | Meet at Wellness and Recreation Center to begin drive to Roan Mountain State Park
    • Noon | Arrive at Roan Mountain State Park and enjoy a picnic lunch
    • 1 p.m. | Afternoon hike
    • 5 p.m. | Set up camp, eat dinner, and enjoy a campfire
  • Sunday
    • 7 a.m. | Wake up and pack up camp
    • 8 a.m. | Drive to Worley’s Cave
    • 1 p.m. | Pack up and head back to campus
    • 5 p.m. | Arrive back at Wellness and Recreation Center


How to Register

  • Register via the WellRec App, My WellRec Portal or bring your Wolfpack One Card to Member Services, located in the lobby of the Wellness and Recreation Center or Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center.
  • The trip fee is due by credit card only (no cash or check accepted) when you signup, and trips are sold on a first-come/first-serve basis.

Trip Information

  • Please plan to attend the required pre-trip meeting for our off-campus trips.
  • Alcohol, tobacco and drug use are prohibited for the duration of the trip. If you violate these rules, you are subject to removal from the trip, and transportation back to NC State will be at your expense.

Refunds

Participants that can no longer attend a trip must inform Outdoor Adventures at least two weeks before the pre-trip meeting. They must request a refund by contacting Wellness and Recreation staff (wellrec-outdoor@ncsu.edu). Deposits on trips are non-refundable.

Partial or full refunds within two weeks of the pre-trip meeting may be considered for personal emergencies with written and verifiable proof of inability to attend (e.g. a doctor’s note). Documentation must be provided at least five business days before the trip’s departure date for any refund to be considered. No refunds will be given after this period, regardless of reason.      

All refunds are at the discretion of Wellness and Recreation. We will provide refunds if the activity is canceled.
