Morning Hike at Umstead State Park

Wake up and start your weekend with a morning hike at Umstead State Park. See the beauty and diversity of the park’s resources, located a short drive from NC State.

Climbing at Pilot Mountain

Put your climbing skills to the test and join us on a climbing trip to Pilot Mountain. Transportation, equipment, instruction and lunch will be provided. We will set up a variety of climbs for both beginners and seasoned climbers alike. 

Transportation, lunch, equipment and instruction are included. The hike to and from the climbing area is the hardest part of the day. It is a 10-minute hike but is strenuous.

Hiking at Schenck Forest

Did you know NC State University operates a forest here in Raleigh? Schenck Forest is home to many activities including hiking! Take a hike with us through this beautifully maintained forest while walking alongside creeks.

Spring Break Canoeing at Hammocks Beach State Park

Join us for a four-day canoeing trip to Hammocks Beach State Park. Canoe through creeks, marshes and sounds and explore diverse seaside life. We will camp on Bear Island, a four-mile-long undeveloped barrier island with wide beaches and massive dunes.

Transportation, food, equipment and instruction are included. 

The canoeing trip is beginner-friendly. No experience is necessary. There will be long paddling days in wilderness areas, and there will be a swim assessment and paddling practice during the pre-trip meeting.

Students Climbing

Bouldering at Moore’s Wall

Leave behind the ropes, harnesses, and boulder with us at Moore’s Wall, located in Hanging Rock State Park. Bouldering is a great way to learn how to climb because you can practice climbing techniques and problem-solving without being far from the ground. This trip is beginner-friendly and requires no previous climbing experience.

Register by Wednesday, March 23 at noon. Transportation, food and instruction are included.

Biking to NC State Farmer’s Market

Enjoy a morning of biking to the Farmer’s Market, shopping at your favorite stand and riding back to campus. Equipment is included, and we can help transport your shopping items back to campus. This trip is beginner-friendly, but you must be comfortable riding a bike on the roadways at a moderate pace.

NC State Student Climbing Outside

Gym to Crag: Skills for Climbing Outside

This skill-based class assists gym climbers in making the transition to outdoor climbing. This trip includes three class sessions followed by a trip to Pilot Mountain State Park. Topics covered in this class are: Personal Anchors, Two Point Anchor Building, Safely Accessing Top Rope Bolts, Transitioning from Lead and Transitioning to Rappel. All participants will need to attend all three sessions of this class.

Mountain Biking at Harris Lake

Join us for a morning of mountain biking at Lake Harris. Learn basic mountain biking skills and techniques, and ride through beautiful forested trails Equipment, transportation, instruction and trip leaders are included. This trip is beginner-friendly, but you must be comfortable riding a bike for an extended period.

Paddling at Lake Raleigh

Join us for a paddling trip to Lake Raleigh. Our staff will teach you how to kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard. This trip is beginner-friendly, requires no previous experience, and is conveniently located on campus.

Sunset Stand-up Paddleboard Yoga

Spring is one of the best times to get outside. Join us for a trip to Lake Raleigh you and practice yoga on a stand-up paddleboard while watching the sunset. This trip is beginner-friendly and requires no previous yoga or paddleboarding experience.

How to Register

  • Register via the WellRec App, My WellRec Portal or bring your Wolfpack One Card to Member Services, located in the lobby of the Wellness and Recreation Center or Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center.
  • The trip fee is due by credit card only (no cash or check accepted) when you signup, and trips are sold on a first-come/first-serve basis.

Trip Information

  • Please plan to attend the required pre-trip meeting for our off-campus trips.
  • Alcohol, tobacco and drug use are prohibited for the duration of the trip. If you violate these rules, you are subject to removal from the trip, and transportation back to NC State will be at your expense.

Refunds

If a participant can no longer go on a trip, participants must inform Outdoor Adventures they can no longer attend at least two weeks before the pre-trip meeting. They must request a refund by contacting Wellness and Recreation staff (wellrec-outdoor@ncsu.edu). Deposits on trips are non-refundable.

For personal emergencies, partial or full refunds between two weeks and the pre-trip meeting may be considered with written and verifiable proof of inability to attend (i.e., a doctor’s note). The participant must provide documentation at least five business days before the trip’s departure date for any refund to be considered. No refunds will be given after this period, regardless of the reason.      

All refunds are at the discretion of Wellness and Recreation. We will provide refunds if the activity is canceled.
