Winter Backpacking
- Dates: Friday, January 20, 2023 – Sunday, January 22, 2023
- Cost: $150 (students only)
- Location: Pisgah National Forest
Deadline to register is Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).
Experience the beauty of the North Carolina Mountains in the winter. Join us for a winter backpacking trip in Pisgah National Forest where we will get away from the city and explore the wilderness of the Timber Ridge area. This trip involves mountain hiking and will cover 9-11 miles of backpacking.
Itinerary:
- Friday:
- 2 p.m. | Meet at Wellness and Recreation to pack up
- 3 p.m. | Drive to Pisgah National Forest
- 8 p.m. | Arrive at camp and enjoy a campfire
- Saturday:
- 7 a.m. | Wake up and eat breakfast
- 8 a.m. | Pack-up camp and drive to trailhead
- 9 a.m. | Backpack through Pisgah National Forest
- 5 p.m. | Setup campsite and cook dinner
- Sunday:
- 8 a.m. | Wake up, make breakfast, and break down camp
- 9 a.m. | Backpack to the trailhead and van
- 12 p.m. | Drive back to Wellness and Recreation to clean-up equipment
- 5 p.m. | Head home!
Transportation, most meals, equipment and instruction are included and no experience is necessary.
This will be a moderately strenuous trip where you will be required to carry a 50 pound backpack over moderate to difficult terrain in a variety of weather conditions.
Bouldering at Moore’s Wall
- Date: Sunday, January 22, 2023
- Cost: $80 (students) | $100 (Wellness and Recreation members)
- Location: Hanging Rock State Park – Moore’s Wall Bouldering Area
Deadline to register is Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).
Leave behind the ropes and harnesses and come bouldering with us at Hanging Rock State Parks’ bouldering area called Moore’s Wall. Bouldering is a great way to get started climbing as it allows you to practice climbing techniques and problem solving without having to be far from the ground. This trip is beginner friendly and requires no previous climbing experience.
Itinerary:
- 6 a.m. | Check in at Outdoor Adventures and drive to Hanging Rock State Park
- 8 a.m. | Try a variety of boulders and learn new techniques from our staff. We’ll have a “picnic” style lunch at the bouldering site.
- 4 p.m. | Drive back to WellRec to clean-up
- 6 p.m. | Head home
Transportation, food, equipment, and instruction are included. No prior experience is necessary.
Skiing and Snowboarding at Beech Mountain
- Date: Sunday, February 5, 2023
- Cost:

- Ski/Snowboard Rentals: $26 – $45
- Clothing Rental: Up to $34
- One-hour Beginner Lesson: $27
- Location: Beech Mountain

Join us for a winter adventure at Beech Mountain. Enjoy a day of skiing or snowboarding at one of the oldest ski areas in North Carolina. Equipment rentals and lessons are available for an additional fee or you are welcome to bring your on equipment.
Itinerary:
- 6 a.m. | Meet at Wellness and Recreation to depart for App Ski Mountain.
- 10 a.m. | Arrive at the Mountain! Staff will give out your slope tickets and help direct everyone to rentals and lessons as appropriate.
- 4 p.m. | Pack up to head home
- 8 p.m. | Arrive at Wellness and Recreation
Transportation is included. Instruction, equipment rentals, and food are not included in this trip.
Hiking at Hanging Rock
- Date: Saturday, February 11, 2023
- Cost: $40 (students) | $50 (Wellness and Recreation members)
- Location: Hanging Rock State Park
Deadline to register is Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).
Early spring is a great time to get outside and see some fantastic views. We’ll drive you to Hanging Rock State Park for a beginner friendly hike. During this trip we’ll be hiking trails that climb onto spectacular views and weave alongside clear streams and waterfalls.
Itinerary:
- 7 a.m. | Check in at the Outdoor Adventures Boat Bay and drive to Hanging Rock State Park
- 9 a.m. | Arrive at trailhead, and get ready to hike. We will eat lunch on the trail (included) and take in the views!
- 3 p.m. | Arrive back at the vans for the drive to campus.
- 6 p.m. | Trip Ends: Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Transportation, lunch, and instruction are included. This will be a moderately strenuous, full day hike.
Morning Hike at Umstead State Park
- Date: Saturday, February 18, 2023
- Cost: $20 (students) | $30 (Wellness and Recreation members)
- Location: William B. Umstead State Park
Deadline to register is Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).
Wake up and start your weekend right with a morning hike to Umstead State Park. This trip will allow you to see the beauty and diversity of resources hosted in this park located just a short drive from the university.
Itinerary:
- 9 a.m. | Trip Starts: Check in at the Outdoor Adventures Boat Bay and drive to Umstead State Park
- 9:30 a.m. | Hike approximately two miles before returning to Wellness and Recreation
- 11 a.m. | Trip Ends: Arrive back on campus, enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Transportation and instruction are included. This will be a beginner friendly hike with easy to moderately difficult terrain.
Hike and Cave at Worley’s Cave
- Dates: Saturday, February 18 – Sunday, February 19
- Cost: $100 (students only)

Did you know cave temperature’s stay the same year round? This makes it the perfect place to visit and stay warm in the winter. Caving will provide you with a unique and inspiring adventure. Have you ever been in complete darkness with no lights from the cities or the stars? Have you ever seen how the mountains are formed from inside them? We’ll teach you everything you need to know and don’t worry the spaces don’t get too small. This trip is beginner friendly and no prior experience is necessary.

Climbing at Rocky Face
- Dat: Saturday, February 25, 2023

- Location: Rocky Face Mountain Recreation Area

Put your climbing skills to the test and join us on a climbing trip to Rocky Face located in western North Carolina. This climbing site is located in a unique park that was once a rock quarry. We will set up a variety of climbs for both beginners and seasoned climbers alike.
Transportation, lunch, equipment, and instruction are included.
Itinerary:
- 6 a.m. | Trip Starts: Check in at the Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental desk
- Load van and start driving to Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area
- Arrive and unload the climbing gear and walk to the climbing area
- Enjoy a variety of climbs
- Eat lunch at the climbing area
- Finish climbing, pack up gear, and hike back to van
- Load up the van and start driving back to campus
- Arrive back to campus and clean up the equipment,

Mountain Biking at Lake Raleigh
- Date: Sunday, February 26
- Cost: $25 (students) | $35 (Wellness and Recreation members)
- Location: Lake Raleigh
Deadline to register is Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 12 p.m. (noon).
Join Outdoor Adventures for a morning of beginner mountain biking using trails located on campus. Enjoy instruction on basic mountain biking skills and techniques while riding through the beautiful forested trails. Equipment, transportation, instruction, and trip leaders are included. This is a beginner trip, but you must be comfortable riding a bike for a couple of hours to participate.
Itinerary:
- 9 a.m. | Check in at the Outdoor Adventures before loading up the van for the short drive to Centennial Campus.
- 9:30 a.m. | Ride Starts: Review mountain bike skills, fit bikes, and discuss the riding plan Get out on the trails, and ride for about 2 hours while working to improve your mountain biking skills.
- 12:30 p.m. | Load up the van and head back to Wellness and Recreation.
- 1 p.m. | Enjoy your weekend!
Highs and Lows Weekend Adventure
Zip-lining, giant swings, ropes course, and caving.

Are you ready to try a series of adventures all in one weekend? This is the perfect adventure for beginners to learn if you like camping, heights, and caves all in one jam-packed weekend.

We’ll also take the opportunity to harness up and fly high in the sky via zip-lines, a giant swing, and a ropes course. These events have something for everyone and vary in heights off the ground and levels of excitement giving everyone something to try.

Zip and Climb at Pilot Mountain

Spend your weekend flying high above the ground by going zip-lining and climbing in the early spring weather.

- 7 a.m. | Wake up and pack up camp before driving to Pilot Mountain State Park
- 8 a.m. | Take a short hike from the parking lot to the climbing site and begin climbing.
- 4 p.m. | Hike back up to the van and drive back to Wellness and Recreation
- 6:30 p.m. | Welcome back, clean up and say goodbye.
Spring Break Trip – Canoeing at Hammock’s Beach
- Dates: Saturday, March 11, 2023 – Tuesday, March 14, 2023
- Cost: $300 (students only)
- Location: Hammock’s Beach State Park

Join Outdoor Adventures for a 4-day canoeing trip to Hammocks Beach State Park. We will canoe through creeks, marshes, and sounds while exploring the diverse seaside life that lives in this area. We will camp on Bear Island, a 4 mile long undeveloped barrier island with wide beaches and massive dunes.

- Arrive at Cedar Point Campground and set up camp
- Practice paddling near Cedar Point before returning to camp for the evening.

- Pack up camp and head to Hammocks Beach State Park
- Paddle across the bogue sound waterways to Bear Island and setup camp

- Return to Bear Island for the night
- Tuesday:
- Wakeup and pack up camp
- Paddle back to the mainland of Hammocks Beach State Park

This will be a beginner friendly canoeing trip. No experience is necessary, however there will be long paddling days in wilderness areas, and there will be a swim assessment and paddling practice during the pre-trip meeting.
Cape Fear River Paddle and Float

Paddle and float down the Cape Fear River in your canoe on this amazing trip. This easy paced trip will allow you to get comfortable with your canoe skills before testing them on some small beginner friendly rapids.

Hiking at Raven Rock State Park

Join us for a beautiful hike at Raven Rock State Park where the trails along the bluffs will lead to beautiful wildflowers and view of the Cape Fear River including a few rapids. Participants will also get to see the park’s namesake: a 150-foot crystalline structure that overlooks the Cape Fear River.

Sunset SUP Yoga

Enjoy all nature has to offer with a beautiful spring sunset while practicing yoga all while on our Stand Up Paddle Boards. This trip is beginner friendly and requires no previous yoga or paddle boarding experience.

Climb, Hike and Camp at Linville Gorge
- Dates: Saturday, April 15, 2023 – Sunday, April 16, 2023

Take your outdoor skills to the next level with this trip focused on introducing you to the skills needed to climb safely outside. Set up camp and relax around a campfire Friday night to prepare for a full day Saturday. We will rise early and introduce you to critical outdoor climbing skills at camp before we gather gear and adventure to Table Rock where we will go on a short hike to the Chimneys. There, you will have the opportunity to test your newly learned skills and help us set up ropes on beginner-friendly routes while we take in the beautiful views of Linville Gorge. No previous hiking, camping, or outdoor climbing experience is necessary, but we will require you to have an active belay certification through the NCSU climbing center before the pre-trip meeting.
Bike to Farmer’s Market

Enjoy a morning of biking to the Farmer’s Market, shopping, and riding back to campus. Equipment is included and we can assist in transporting your shopping items back to campus. This is a beginner trip, but you must be comfortable riding a bike on the roadways at a moderate pace to participate.

Falls Lake Paddling
- Date: Sunday, April 23, 2023
- Cost: $40 (students) | $50 (Wellness and Recreation members)
- Location: Falls Lake Recreation Area

Explore the Falls Lake Recreation area by paddling along with us on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. This amazing lake always offers a cool breeze and easy paddling.
Itinerary
- 1 p.m. | Check in at Outdoor Adventures and load up for a drive to Falls Lake State Recreation Area.
- 2 p.m. | Paddle starting and ending at the Beaver dam Boat ramp where you will learn the basics of paddling as we tour the lake.
- 4 p.m. | Load up and drive back to Wellness and Recreation
- 5 p.m. | Clean up and head home
How to Register
- Register via the WellRec App, My WellRec Portal or bring your Wolfpack One Card to Member Services, located in the lobby of the Wellness and Recreation Center or Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center.
- The trip fee is due by credit card only (no cash or check accepted) when you signup, and trips are sold on a first-come/first-serve basis.
Trip Information
- Please plan to attend the required pre-trip meeting for our off-campus trips.
- Alcohol, tobacco and drug use are prohibited for the duration of the trip. If you violate these rules, you are subject to removal from the trip, and transportation back to NC State will be at your expense.
Refunds
If a participant can no longer go on a trip, participants must inform Outdoor Adventures they can no longer attend at least two weeks before the pre-trip meeting. They must request a refund by contacting Wellness and Recreation staff (wellrec-outdoor@ncsu.edu). Deposits on trips are non-refundable.
For personal emergencies, partial or full refunds between two weeks and the pre-trip meeting may be considered with written and verifiable proof of inability to attend (i.e., a doctor’s note). The participant must provide documentation at least five business days before the trip’s departure date for any refund to be considered. No refunds will be given after this period, regardless of the reason.
All refunds are at the discretion of Wellness and Recreation. We will provide refunds if the activity is canceled.
