Beginner Mountain Biking

Date: Friday, June 7, 2019

Time: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Cost: $25 per student
Registration Deadline: Thursday, June 7, 2019 by 12 p.m.
Pre-trip Information: Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 6 p.m. in the Lakes Classroom, Room 1608.

Join us for a half-day of mountain biking at Lake Crabtree County Park. Enjoy a beginner technical mountain biking skills lesson, ride through the beautiful forested trails, and explore the great single track that is so close to the city. Equipment, transportation, instruction and trip leaders are included. This is a beginner trip, but you must be comfortable riding a bike for a couple of hours to participate.

  • 9 a.m. Trip Starts: Check in at the Carmichael Recreation Center, at the Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center
    • Load up the van and drive to Lake Crabtree County Park
    • Arrive at Lake Crabtree and unload the bikes and learn basic mountain bike anatomy and basic technical skills.
    • Get on the trails and practice your mountain biking skills
    • Head back to the van, load up the mountain bikes, and head back to campus
  • 1 p.m. Trip Ends: Finish your adventure and enjoy the rest of your day.

Stand-up Paddleboarding

Date: Saturday, June 22, 2019

Time: 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Cost: $35 per student
Registration Deadline: Thursday, June 20, 2019 by 12 p.m.
Pre-trip Information: Thursday, June 20, 2019 at 6 p.m. in the Lakes Classroom, Room 1608.

Join us for a fun and relaxing day of stand-up paddleboarding at Falls Lake State Recreation Area, a 40-minute drive from campus. Transportation, equipment, lunch and instruction are included, and no experience is necessary

  • 8 a.m. Trip Starts: Check in at the Carmichael Recreation Center, at the Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center
    • Load up the van and drive to Falls Lake Recreation Areas
    • Arrive at the Beverdam Boat Ramp at Falls Lake and unload the boats and learn basic stand-up paddleboarding anatomy and basic paddle strokes.
    • Get on the lake and practice your paddling skills
    • Head back to the van, load up the mountain bikes, and head back to campus
    • Head back to the van, load up the SUPs, and eat lunch
    • Leave Falls Lake and head back to campus
  • 2 p.m. Trip Ends: Finish your adventure and enjoy the rest of your day

Paddle and Popsicles

Date: Saturday, August 24, 2019

Time: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Cost: Free

Get away from Main Campus and head to Lake Raleigh, a gem on Centennial Campus. Kayaks, canoes and stand up paddle boards will get you out on the water. Stay cool with fresh fruit popsicles from Citizen Pops (while supplies last). Come when you can and stay as long as you’d like for a good time and to meet new friends. If you want to spend more time in the sunshine, consider taking a Lime Bike to the lake. This event is certified as an NC State Sustainable Event by the University Sustainability Office.

Equipment is included. Please have your Wolfpack one card with you

Afternoon Hike at Umstead State Park

Date: Friday, September 6, 2019

Time: 3 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Cost:$5 per student

Want to get outside for a couple of hours on a Friday afternoon and meet new people? Explore the local Raleigh Trails? Join us for an afternoon of hiking and socializing.

Transportation and instruction are included.  This is a nice easy social hike, and beginners are welcome.

  • 3 p.m. Trip Starts: Check in at the Carmichael Recreation Center, at the Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center
    • Load up the van and drive to Umstead State Park
    • Arrive at Umstead State Park and start hiking.
    • Finish hiking, load up the van and head back to campus
  • 6 p.m. Trip Ends: Finish your adventure and enjoy the rest of your day.

Beginners welcome. Have fun experiencing the beautiful Falls Lake the best way you can, by kayak.  This will be a fun and easy paddling trip, perfect for every skill level.

Transportation, equipment and instruction are included.

  • 1 p.m. Trip Starts: Check in at the Carmichael Recreation Center, at the Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center
    • Load up the van and drive to Falls Lake State Recreation Area
    • Arrive at the Beaverdam Boat Ramp at Falls Lake and unload the boats and learn basic kayak anatomy and basic kayak paddle strokes.
    • Get on the lake and practice your paddling skills.
    • Head back to the van, load up the kayaks and head back to campus.

Challenge Course

Time: 3 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Cost: $10 per student
Registration Deadline: Friday, September 13, 2019 by 12 p.m.

Join our knowledgeable challenge course staff and check out the NC State Challenge Course. You will go up into the high course, traverse the elements then fly off the Zip line. Our friendly challenge course staff will walk you through everything you need to know to have a blast at the challenge course, so this is a perfect activity for beginners.

Instruction and equipment are included. This is a beginner friendly event and no experience is necessary.

Getting to the Course

  • 3 p.m.: A shuttle will leave from the Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center
  • Any time between 3 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.: Feel free to drive yourself out to the course

Leaving the Course

  • 5 p.m.: A shuttle will leave the High Ropes Course to come back to campus
  • 6:30 p.m.: The last shuttle will leave the High Ropes Course to come back to campus. Feel free to drive yourself back from the course anytime.

Fall Harvest and Campout at the NC State Farm

Date: Friday - Saturday, September 20 - 21, 2019

Time: Friday at 3:30 p.m. to Saturday at 12 p.m.

Cost: $20 per student

Friday

  • 3:30 p.m. Trip Starts: Check in at the Carmichael Recreation Center, at the Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center
    • Load up the van and drive to NC State Farm
    • Arrive at the farm and unload the bus.
    • Learn how to set up tents, set up camp. Once camp is set up, help out on the farm.
    • Play lawn games, socialize or explore the farm.
    • Help cook dinner with food harvested from the farm.
    • Enjoy time around a campfire, make S’mores, have a jam session or just socialize.

Saturday

  • Wake up, eat breakfast (included), and pack up camp.
    • Load up the van and drive to Yates Mill Pond
    • Load up the bus and drive back to campus.
    • Arrive back on campus and clean up equipment.
  • 12 p.m. : Trip EndsFinish up your farm experience and have a great rest of the weekend.

Transportation, all meals, equipment, and instruction are included. This is a perfect beginner introduction to camping trip, and fun for everyone.

Falls Lake Mountains-to-Sea Trail Workday

Join us and surrounding university and community groups for National Trail Day. We will be working with the Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail Organization and giving back to the community, by doing trail maintenance on a small portion of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail is a 1175 mile trail that traverses North Carolina, from the mountains all the way to the sea! Transportation, equipment, lunch, and instruction are included, and no experience is necessary.

Backpacking in Pisgah National Forest

Date: Thursday - Sunday, October 10 - 13, 2019
Time: Thursday at 8 a.m. to Sunday at 7 p.m
Cost:$200 per student

Pre-trip Information: Thursday, October 3, 2019 at 6 p.m. in the “Lakes” Classroom, Room 1608.

Experience North Carolina’s beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. We will be backpacking through the Pisgah National Forest backcountry in Western NC.  We will be camping each night at a new location and sharing life together for a few days on the trail. This will be a moderately strenuous trip where you will be required to carry a 50 pound backpack over rugged terrain in a variety of weather conditions.

Thursday

  • 8:00 a.m. Trip Starts: Check in at the Carmichael Recreation Center, at the Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center
    • Pack up the gear, load the van and head to the mountains.
    • Arrive at the trailhead in Pisgah National Forest. Eat lunch at the trailhead, then start backpacking.
    • Backpack about 3 miles.
    • Get to camp and set up tents, cook dinner and eat.
  • Bedtime. Rest up for the next day.

Friday

  • Wake up, make breakfast, and break down camp.
    • Backpack about 6-8 miles.
    • Eat lunch on the trail.
  • Arrive at camp, set up tents, cook dinner and eat.
  • Bedtime. Rest up for the next day.
  • Saturday

    • Wake up, make breakfast, break down camp, and start backpacking for the day.
      • Backpack about 7-9 miles and eat lunch on the trail.
      • Arrive at camp and set up tents, cook dinner and eat.
    • Bedtime. Rest up for the next day.
  • Sunday

    • Wake up, make breakfast, break down camp, and start backpacking for the day.
      • Backpack about 1-3 miles and eat lunch on the trail, in the van or stop on the way back.
      • Arrive at camp and set up tents, cook dinner and eat.
    • Arrive back at the van, load up equipment, and start driving back to campus
    • Arrive back to campus, unload and clean equipment.

Climbing at Pilot Mountain

Date: Sunday, October 20, 2019
Time: 6 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Cost:$40 per student

Pre-trip Information: Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at 6 p.m. in the “Lakes” Classroom, Room 1608.

Check out one of North Carolina’s natural icons.  Pilot Mountain offers awe inspiring views while providing a perfect playground for new and veteran rock climbers alike.  We will set up a variety of climbs, from easy beginner climbs, up to fun, classic intermediate climbs. Transportation, lunch, equipment, and instruction are included. The hike to and from the climbing area is the hardest part of the day. It is only a 10 minute hike, but is strenuous.

No experience is necessary.

  • 6:00 a.m. Trip Starts: Check in at the Carmichael Recreation Center, at the Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center
    • Load the van and start driving to Pilot Mountain State Park.
    • Arrive at Pilot Mountain, unload the climbing gear and walk to the climbing area. The hike to/from climbing area is about 10 minutes, but very steep and eat lunch at the climbing area.
    • Finish climbing, pack up gear, and hike back to the van
    • Load up the van and start driving back to campus.
    • Arrive back to campus and clean up the equipment.
  • 7 p.m. : Trip Ends Have a great rest of the night.

Stone Mountain Fall Colors Hike

Date: Saturday, October 26, 2019
Time: 6 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Cost:$25 per student
Registration Deadline:Wednesday, October 23, 2019, at 12 p.m.
Pre-trip Information:Wednesday, October 23, 2019, at 6 p.m. in the “Lakes” Classroom, Room 1608.

Western North Carolina in the Fall is one of the most beautiful places in the world.  Explore Stone Mountain State Park and take in all of the fall colors.  A moderate level of hiking is to be expected (5-8 miles, while carrying a light daypack).

  • 6:00 a.m. Trip Starts: Check in at the Carmichael Recreation Center, at the Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center
    • Load the van and start driving to Stone Mountain State Park.
    • Arrive at Stone Mountain, and get ready to hike for the day. You will eat lunch on the trail (included) and take in the fall colors
    • Finish hiking, load up the van, and head back to campus.
    • Arrive back on campus and clean up equipment.
  • 7 p.m. : Trip Ends Have a great rest of the weekend.


November

Challenge Course

How to Register

  • Bring your Wolfpack One Card to to the first floor of the Carmichael Recreation Center to register for a trip.
  • Trips are sold on a first-come/first serve basis.
  • Full payment is due at the time of registration.
  • Deposits are accepted if the trips costing more than $100.

Trip Information

  • You must attend the pre-trip meeting for your specific trip. If you do not attend the meeting you will be dropped from the trip and a refund will not be given.
  • You must pass the Fitness Assessment and/or Water Comfort Test if required for your trip.
  • You must travel in our vehicles. Driving separately, meeting the group or being picked up is not allowed.
  • Alcohol, tobacco and drug use are prohibited for the duration of the trip. If you violate these rules you are subject to removal from the trip and transportation back to NC State will be at your expense.

Refunds

To be considered for a refund, please inform us least two weeks before the pre-trip meeting that can no longer attend. You must fill out a refund request, which must be turned into us. Deposits on trips are non-refundable.

For personal emergencies, partial or full refunds between two weeks and the pre-trip meeting may be provided in consideration of written and verifiable proof of inability to attend (a doctor’s note). Documentation must be provided five working days before the trip’s departure date in order for any refund to be considered. No refunds will be given after this period regardless of reason.

All refunds are at the discretion of the Outdoor Adventures coordinator. Refunds will be provided if we cancel the activity.
