Wellness and Recreation Guidelines

Sports and recreational activities have inherent dangers and physical risks that no amount of care, caution, instruction, or expertise can eliminate.

These dangers and risks include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Loss of or damage to personal property;
  • Broken bones, strains, sprains, bruises, heart attacks, heat exhaustion, concussions, paralysis, and other personal injuries, or even death, that could result from tripping, falling, contact with other individuals, exposure to inclement weather, and equipment failure, among other causes; and
  • Exposure to contagious diseases such as COVID-19.

By voluntarily participating in sports and recreational activities through NC State Wellness and Recreation and using Wellness and Recreation facilities and equipment, 

  1. You assume responsibility for all risks and liabilities, known and unknown, that may arise from your participation; and 
  2. You acknowledge and agree that your voluntary participation is in reliance upon your own judgment and knowledge of your own experience and capabilities.

  • Wellness and Recreation reserves the right to implement any additional guidelines that protect the health and safety of the facility and its users.
  • All individuals must have a valid Wellness and Recreation membership, or be a participant or spectator of a Wellness and Recreation hosted event.
  • All Wellness and Recreation members are invited to bring up to three (3) guests per visit by purchasing a guest pass. Guests must enter, exit and remain in the facilities at all times with the Wellness and Recreation member.
  • Individuals under the age of 18 are only permitted in the facility during authorized Wellness and Recreation sponsored activities or during family recreation hours. During these programs they should be accompanied by a responsible guardian over the age of 18.  
  • Use of Wellness and Recreation facilities is a privilege. Anyone violating guidelines, including verbal and/or physical abuse to employees, users, criminal activity, disorderly conduct or inappropriate behavior is subject to:
    • Immediate removal
    • Suspension of membership
    • Administrative referral to the Office of Student Conduct 
    • Criminal action
  • Appropriate clothing is required in all activity areas. See specific area guidelines for more detailed information.  
  • No animals, with the exception of service animals, are permitted in/on Wellness and Recreation facilities.  
  • Bikes, scooters and skateboards should be stored in designated areas.  
  • Motorized vehicles are prohibited inside the facility, with the exception of electric carts to assist persons with disabilities. 
  • Movement of any equipment or furniture may only be conducted by Wellness and Recreation staff. Improper use or unapproved modifications of equipment beyond the manufacturer’s purpose are not permitted.
  • Use of outside equipment training materials, especially items that may be considered a weapon, must be approved by Wellness and Recreation staff.
  • Injuries, accidents or equipment failures should be reported immediately to Wellness and Recreation staff.
  • The use of tape or other marking materials is prohibited on walls, doors or floor surfaces unless approved by Wellness and Recreation staff.
    • Requests for approval to post flyers, signs or posters are directed to the Wellness and Recreation marketing and communications staff.
    • Anyone requesting to take photographs or video in Wellness and Recreation facilities must request permission from Wellness and Recreation marketing and communications staff.
  • We encourage and support persons with disabilities to bring trained assistants as needed. Any trained assistant supporting a person with disabilities may enter the facility at no charge (must be in compliance with guidelines by presenting a valid ID).
  • Wellness and Recreation and Health and Exercise Studies scheduled activities within the facility have priority.
  • Food is permitted in designated areas. Wellness and Recreation allows the admittance and use of non-alcoholic beverages in spill-proof, break-resistant containers only within all Wellness and Recreation facilities.
    • Glass products, alcohol, smoking, e-cigarettes, vaping or tobacco products are prohibited.
  • Secure your personal belongings. Wellness and Recreation is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.
    • Lockers are available for storage of all personal items.
NOTICE: SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK.
  • Wellness and Recreation reserves the right to implement any additional guidelines that protect the health and safety of the facility and its users.
  • Unauthorized use of the pools without a certified Wellness and Recreation lifeguard is prohibited.
  • Participants should wear appropriate swim attire that does not hinder the ability to swim.  
  • All swimmers must shower before entering the pool area.
  • Participants may not hang on the lane lines.
  • Use of diving boards is prohibited during recreational swim.
  • Hyperventilation and underwater breath holding are prohibited.
  • Kickboards, pool buoys and other swim equipment are for exercise purposes only and should not be used as flotation devices.
  • No animals, with the exception of service animals, are permitted in/on Wellness and Recreation facilities.  
  • Diving, running on the decks, pushing and other horseplay around the pool is prohibited.
  • Food is permitted in designated areas. Wellness and Recreation allows the admittance and use of non-alcoholic beverages in spill-proof, break-resistant containers only within all Wellness and Recreation facilities.
    • Glass products, alcohol, smoking, e-cigarettes, vaping or tobacco products are prohibited.
  • Pools will be evacuated and closed in the event of adverse weather or any other potentially hazardous situations as determined by Wellness and Recreation staff.
  • Secure your personal belongings. Wellness and Recreation is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.
    • Lockers are available for storage of all personal items
FAMILY SWIM GUIDELINES
  • Wellness and Recreation reserves the right to implement any additional guidelines that protect the health and safety of the facility and its users.
  • Children must be supervised at all times. Under no circumstances are children to be left unattended.
  • A parent must directly supervise children younger than 12 years of age and all children unable to swim at least 25 yards without stopping.
  • A parent must be within arm’s reach of any child unable to swim and/or using a flotation device.
  • Parents are not to swim laps while they are with their children in the pool.
  • A parent, guardian or responsible adult (age 18 or over) must accompany children into the appropriate locker room.
  • Single-occupant lockers rooms are available for use.

  • No sparring, wrestling, boxing or other forms of martial arts are permitted with other participants in the combat room.
  • Socks must be worn at all times. No shoes or bare feet are permitted on the mats.
  • Gloves must be worn when using heavy bags and speed bags.
  • Do not remove the punching bags.
  • Food is permitted in designated areas. Wellness and Recreation allows the admittance and use of non-alcoholic beverages in spill-proof, break-resistant containers only within all Wellness and Recreation facilities.

Academic Filming

Still photography and filming is permitted for academic use only. This includes photography for a class assignment.

Requests will typically have a response within 48 hours.

Filming Instructions

  • Check-in at the Member Services, located at the north entrance of the Wellness and Recreation Center, upon arrival.
  • Advise Wellness and Recreation staff that you have submitted a request to take photographs of the facility for your own academic use.
  • When entering the various facility spaces, please check in with the staff on duty at these spaces, i.e. lifeguards or strength and conditioning assistants, etc.
  • Photographers must seek permission from participants at informal sports facility areas before proceeding with photography. It is the responsibility of the photographer to have signed release forms.
  • To take photographs at group fitness classes, photographers must arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of the class to inform the group fitness instructor of exact details of the shoot. Any participant who does not want to be in the shot will have the ability to move to one side of the room, which will not be photographed/filmed.

Commercial and News Filming

NOTICE: PARTICIPATE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
  • Weight clips are required to be used at all times.
  • Spotters are strongly recommended.
  • Participants are recommended to re-rack weights, clean and wipe down equipment/upholstery immediately after use. 
  • Olympic weightlifting and chalk is prohibited, except in the PackStrong 1202 room.
  • Inverted exercises are prohibited from the top of any machine or squat rack.
  • Placing feet against walls is not permitted. 
  • Equipment must remain in designated fitness spaces. 
  • Equipment must be used for the manufactured intended purpose only.
  • Always notify Wellness and Recreation staff if you notice any broken, damaged or unsafe equipment.
  • Closed-toe, closed-heel athletic shoes with non-marking soles are required in all activity areas.
  • Personal training instruction is limited to Wellness and Recreation employees. Personal trainers not employed with Wellness and Recreation may not instruct clients within the facility.
  • Food is permitted in designated areas. Wellness and Recreation allows the admittance and use of non-alcoholic beverages in spill-proof, break-resistant containers only within all Wellness and Recreation facilities.
    • Glass products, alcohol, smoking, e-cigarettes, vaping or tobacco products are prohibited.

This space is prioritized for Olympic Weightlifting and ground-based barbell movements.

  • Weight clips are required to be used at all times.
  • Spotting for Olympic weightlifting is strictly prohibited.
  • Closed-toe shoes must be worn at all times.
  • All bumper plates and weight collars should be cleared from the bar and put back in the proper location immediately after use.  
  • Equipment must remain in designated fitness spaces.
NOTICE: PARTICIPATE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
  • Appropriate athletic clothing and closed-toe, closed-heel athletic shoes with non-marking soles must be worn unless exceptions are made for the type of activity.
    • Street shoes and high heels are not allowed unless they have felt bottoms or are considered appropriate dance shoes. Tap dancing is prohibited.
  • Facility users do not have access to utilize audio and fitness equipment.
  • All equipment must stay in fitness studios.
  • Cycling studio bike pedals and clips may not be removed.
  • Participants are recommended to clean and wipe down equipment/upholstery immediately after use and return to designated storage area.
  • Food is permitted in designated areas. Wellness and Recreation allows the admittance and use of non-alcoholic beverages in spill-proof, break-resistant containers only within all Wellness and Recreation facilities.
    • Glass products, alcohol, smoking, e-cigarettes, vaping or tobacco products are prohibited.

NOTICE: PARTICIPATE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
  • Participants may not enter a class five minutes after the scheduled start time. Entrance is prohibited after five minutes ensuring that all participants arrive early enough to become sufficiently warmed up for the more vigorous parts of the class. Please respect this rule and the instructor when they enforce it.
  • Please inform the instructor if you have any special considerations (e.g., pregnancy, injury, illness, recent surgery) which may influence your ability to take a class.
  • Proper athletic footwear should be worn in fitness classes.
CYCLING CLASSES
  • It is highly recommended that you bring a water bottle and towel.
  • Our bikes have SPD clips. Participants are welcome to bring cycling shoes that clip into our pedals, but may not remove the pedals and insert their own clips.
  • Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to class in order to ensure proper adjustments for bike fitting.

  • Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Courts are primarily intended for basketball, volleyball, pickleball and badminton. Other activities are permissible if considered safe and appropriate as determined by Wellness and Recreation staff.
  • Dunking is permitted. Hanging on the rim or net is not permitted due to the risk of injury and potential damage of equipment.
  • Participants must wear shirts at all times. 
  • Proper athletic shoes with non-marking soles are required in all activity areas.
  • Disassembling or moving equipment that has been set-up is not allowed. Ask a Wellness and Recreation staff member to set up or remove equipment.
  • Use of tape or other marking materials is prohibited on walls, doors or floor surfaces unless approved by Wellness and Recreation staff.
  • Food is permitted in designated areas. Wellness and Recreation allows the admittance and use of non-alcoholic beverages in spill-proof, break-resistant containers only within all Wellness and Recreation facilities.
    • Glass products, alcohol, smoking, e-cigarettes, vaping or tobacco products are prohibited.

  • No climbing is allowed without Wellness and Recreation Outdoor Adventures staff on duty.
  • Individuals must obtain a belay card by passing a safety skills assessment to belay at the climbing wall. Users may climb at the wall who do not take this assessment, provided they are belayed by a climbing wall staff member or a current belay card holder.
  • Present your belay card to staff before climbing.
  • Boulder only at or below shoulder height. A spotter is recommended when bouldering. Do not traverse under top-roped climbers.
  • All climbing above shoulder height must be protected by a top rope belay. 
  • Climbing shoes or closed-toe, closed-heel athletic shoes must be worn.
  • Personal harnesses, shoes and hardware are allowed, but must be inspected by staff prior to use. Equipment should adhere to manufacturer’s recommendations for use and care. Personal climbing ropes are prohibited.
  • Chalk balls are permissible. Loose climbing chalk is not permitted. 
  • Slackline may only be used with permission from Wellness and Recreation Outdoor Adventures staff.
  • Slackline may only be used by one person at a time. No jumping on or off of the slackline.
  • Guests of Wellness and Recreation members are allowed to climb at the wall when accompanied by their member sponsor.
  • Children five years-old and older are allowed to climb during open family recreation times, provided they can fit into a climbing harness safely and can follow staff directions. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
  • Food is permitted in designated areas. Wellness and Recreation allows the admittance and use of non-alcoholic beverages in spill-proof, break-resistant containers only within all Wellness and Recreation facilities.

ROPED CLIMBING GUIDELINES
  • Personal climbing harness, shoes and hardware are permitted and must be inspected by Outdoor Adventures staff prior to use.
  • Personal climbing ropes are prohibited.
  • Do not swing on ropes.
  • Individuals must obtain a belay or lead belay card by passing a Skills Assessment to belay at the Climbing Center.
  • All belayers and climbers must utilize proper belay technique and double-check their set up (partner checks) before beginning each climb.
  • Lead climbing is a privilege. While leading, climbers are required to clip all appropriate quickdraws on that route – without skipping any quickdraws.
  • Practice lead falls are not allowed in the facility except in lessons supervised by NC State staff.
  • Slackline is only permitted when supervised by NC State Outdoor Adventures staff. Slackline is limited to one person per time and does not allow for jumping on and off.
BOULDERING GUIDELINES
  • Stay alert, be aware of your surroundings and other climbers at all times.
  • Be mindful and do not climb above or below another climber.
  • Please stand or sit a safe distance away from the top of the wall while not climbing.
  • Please keep fall zones clear of any personal belongings or other hazards at all times.
  • While bouldering, it is recommended to have a minimum of one spotter per climber.
  • Roped climbers have the right of way. Do not traverse under roped climbers.

Please be aware that climbing is an inherently dangerous sport. Climbing or bouldering on any manufactured climbing wall can result in falls, and falling from any height can result in serious injury or even death. If you have any questions or concerns about climbing in this facility or these risks, please speak with a member of the Outdoor Adventures team. Safety is the highest priority of Wellness and Recreation.

  • Please use caution when entering and exiting the track.
  • Running direction varies each day. Please follow posted directional signage.
  • Inside lanes are designated for walking. Outside lanes are designated for running/jogging.
  • Spectating or standing on the track is prohibited.
  • Closed-toe, athletic shoes with non-marking soles are required in all activity areas. Cleats of any kind are not permitted.
  • Food is permitted in designated areas. Wellness and Recreation allows the admittance and use of non-alcoholic beverages in spill-proof, break-resistant containers only within all Wellness and Recreation facilities.
    • Glass products, alcohol, smoking, e-cigarettes, vaping or tobacco products are prohibited.
  • Secure your personal belongings. Wellness and Recreation is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.
    • Lockers are available for storage of all personal items.
  • Taking photos or videos in the locker rooms or restrooms is strictly prohibited. Please report violators to Wellness and Recreation staff.  
  • Wellness and Recreation honors the stated gender identity of our patrons. Gender identity may not be apparent or correspond with stereotypes about physical presentation.
  • Water extractors are reserved for swimsuits only. Towels, soiled clothing or other items may not be placed in the extractors.
  • Wellness and Recreation staff will access the locker rooms at various times for safety and maintenance reasons.

  • A parent, guardian or responsible adult (age 18 or over) must accompany children into the appropriate locker room.
OVERNIGHT AND DAY-USE LOCKERS
  • Rental lockers are available on an annual basis. For further details (cost, size, eligibility, etc.) see staff at Member Services. 

Day-use lockers are available at no cost during hours of operation. The following policies apply to day-use lockers:

  • Available at no cost during hours of operation.
  • Use personal locks on day-use lockers within locker rooms. 
  • Belongings in day-use lockers must be cleared out before the daily facility closing. Personal locks on day-use lockers remaining will be removed upon facility closing. Present a photo ID or description of your possessions to retrieve items at Equipment Checkout

  • Motorized vehicles are prohibited inside the facility, with the exception of electric carts to assist persons with disabilities.

  • Secure your personal belongings. Wellness and Recreation is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.
    • Lockers are available in the Wellness and Recreation Center for storage of all personal items.

  • Motorized vehicles are prohibited inside the facility, with the exception of electric carts to assist persons with disabilities.

  • Closed-toe, closed-heel athletic shoes with non-marking soles must be worn on racquetball and squash courts.
  • All metal racquets must have a plastic guard attached to racquet heads.
  • Courts are primarily intended for racquetball, squash, handball and wallyball. Other activities are permissible if considered safe and appropriate as determined by Wellness and Recreation staff.
  • Protective eyewear is strongly recommended.
  • Food is permitted in designated areas. Wellness and Recreation allows the admittance and use of non-alcoholic beverages in only spill-proof, break-resistant containers within all Wellness and Recreation facilities.
    • Glass products, alcohol, smoking, e-cigarettes, vaping or tobacco products are prohibited.
  • Secure your personal belongings. Wellness and Recreation is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.
    • Lockers are available for storage of all personal items.
IMPORTANT HEALTH NOTICE:

Due to high temperatures and humidity, Sauna and Steam Room can be dangerous to your health. It is recommended that all persons consult a physician before using these rooms.

  • Sauna and Steam Room are public spaces. Appropriate clothing is required (swimsuit or gym shorts) at all times.
  • Shoes are prohibited.
  • Any individual engaging in disorderly or inappropriate conduct will be asked to leave the complex by Wellness and Recreation staff or University Police.
  • Do not tamper with equipment in the sauna or steam room.  
  • For safety reasons, it is recommended that you limit time in the Sauna or Steam Room to 10 minutes. Consult a physician for longer use.
  • Food is permitted in designated areas. Wellness and Recreation allows the admittance and use of non-alcoholic beverages in spill-proof, break-resistant containers only within all Wellness and Recreation facilities.
    • Glass products, alcohol, smoking, e-cigarettes, vaping or tobacco products are prohibited.
